I giggled because in my humor writing I use self-deprecating humor as well and have had the same response — people trying to encourage me when what I said was exaggerated for comedic effect.

There should be very little rules in writing in my humble opinion. Or should I say, the only rule is to be as honest as you can about each character — if he/she is an a-hole, well then, you have no choice, right?
