On the mountain lion attack video, I saw many comments about how they would just, "pick up a rock and throw it." The problem is when you crouch down, the ML sees an opportunity to attack. It isn't always so simple. I'm glad you mentioned that he tried to pick one up several times. These animals are so beautiful and when they attack humans, they often get killed.
